for STEM women on the academic career path
Diversity in the Academy. What Institutions Can Do
While the representation of females in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) PhD attainment has significantly increased in recent years, the corresponding faculties are still overwhelmingly dominated by men (as shown here).
Institutions can warm the climate for women and other underrepresented groups in the STEM faculty. Faculty members can take a pro-active stance for diversity in the academy. Some workshop materials I have developed together with Claudia Morrissey (founder of UIC WISEST) and other STEM faculty are included here:
- What research shows us : unconscious bias can affect evaluations for those in under-represented groups; accumulation of advantage and disadvantage can arise from small differences in treatment over time
- Diversity workshops : Procedures for finding and recruiting women and others who are under-represented in the academy
- Search Committees : Procedures to ensure an inclusive and effective faculty search
- A Faculty Search Toolkit
- Case Studies : procedures for recruiting into the applicant pool can make a difference in the outcomes. Data from two case studies are presented.
- Promotion & Tenure Committees : Raising awareness of unconscious bias in evaluating the accomplishments of faculty in research, teaching and service.
